Passive Adduction with Resisted Abduction

The Passive Adduction with Resisted Abduction test is designed to detect the presence of greater trochanteric pain syndrome caused by involvement of the tendons of gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and the trochanteric bursa.

To perform the test, ask the patient to lie on the uninvolved side with their hip flexed to allow the involved hip to adduct toward the table.

Place one hand on the pelvis to provide stability and the other just below the knee. Instruct the patient to abduct their hip against your resistance. The test is considered positive if it reproduces or aggravates the patient’s lateral hip pain.
