Valsalva Test

The Valsalva test is designed to detect the presence of a space-occupying lesion.

With the patient in the seated position, ask them to take in a deep breath and hold it in for about 10 to 15 seconds while bearing down as if having a bowel movement. This increases pressure in the intra-thecal space.

The test is considered positive if it produces or exacerbates neck pain, upper limb pain, or both.
