Resisted External Derotation Test

The Resisted External Derotation test is designed to detect the presence of Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.

With the patient in the supine position, flex the knee and hip to 90 degrees and then externally rotate the hip.  Ask the patient to rotate the hip back to the neutral position while you resist their motion. This test is considered positive if the patient reports the reproduction or aggravation of pain in the area of the greater trochanter.
